Beating the Bounds – The Parish Perambulation 2019
Later this year we shall be commemorating the Beating of the Bounds, a long standing tradition that undertakes to circumnavigate the entire parish visiting the original boundary stones, bridges and gateways that marked the limits Ilsington land. The event will take place over 4 stages and whilst the distances covered are not unreasonable, the terrain at times is challenging. The four walks will take between 4 and 6 hours to allow time for everyone to cross stiles, ford streams, retrieve footwear from boggy ground and to linger over the important markers along the way. We shall encourage younger members to experience being ‘bumped’ on the bound stones so that they may better remember the experience in years to come. The organizing committee are finalising details and, subject to landowners permissions, this is the proposed schedule with routes:
Saturday 18thMay Holbrooke Farm to Drum Bridges via Chipley and Staplehill
Saturday 15thJune Hemsworthy Gate to Stancombe Farm via Rippon Tor, Sigford and Ramshorn Down
Saturday 29thJune Green Lane to Drumbridges via Colehayes, Brimley and Langaller Farm
Saturday 13thJuly Hemsworthy Gate to the top of the Green Lane via Holwell Lawn, Black Hill and Owlacombe Burrow
Each walk will commence with registration at 10.30 am except Saturday 29thJune which will start at 9.30 am to allow participants to attend Liverton Fayre later in the afternoon. Further details will be issued closer to the event and we are grateful to Ilsington Parish Council and Ilsington Local History Group who are working to make this a summer to remember. The event is being funded through Moor Than Meets the Eye and the ‘Parishscapes Project’.
